Coaching Seminar
The University of Western Ontario is hosting a coaching conference on Sunday, April 3rd from 8:30 am – 3:00 pm. The seminar is designed to help competitive coaches upgrade their skill level and become more effective coaches. Speakers include Clarke Singer (UWO hockey), Ted Brown (UWO hockey), Dave Gwyn (Canada U22 hockey), Dwayne Blais (Total package Hockey), Doug Stacey (Team Canada, physiotherapist) and Natascha Wesch (sports psychologist, former National rugby team coach). There will also be a Question and Answer period with Mel Davidson, Head Coach of Canada’s Olympic Women’s Hockey team.
The seminar will feature a game analysis component as the participants will watch a Provincial Women’s Hockey League championship game and then discuss various aspects of the game including team systems, between period adjustments, and overall game analysis. The schedule is provided below.

Speakers
Dwayne Blais is Director of Hockey Operations for Total Package Hockey. Dwayne currently works with NHL draft picks, OHL Superstars, NCAA division I players, as well as young skaters playing AAA hockey in Ontario. He previously coached in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Saint John Seadogs and has also been a Power Skating Coach for the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League. Dwayne brings over 15 years of professional power skating and instructional experience. He played 4 years of professional hockey as a member of the Mississippi Seawolves in the East Coast Hockey League. Dwayne also played 4 years of college hockey for the NCAA Division I UAH Chargers, was captain his senior year and won the CHA scoring title back to back years.
Ted Brown is an Associate coach of UWO Women’s hockey team. Ted is a long-time London minor hockey league coach and hockey-school operator with over 20 years of experience coaching in Canada, the United States and Europe. Over the course of his coaching career he has won 3 provincial championships. Ted’s passion and knowledge for the game are renowned in London circles. He played four years for the Guelph Gryphons and is a former captain of the team.
Mel Davidson was named Hockey Canada’s head scout of Women’s National Team Programs on July 1, 2010 … Served as head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Team at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C., winning gold on home ice … Named head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Team through the end of the 2009-10 season on July 16, 2008 … Guided Canada to a gold medal at 2009 4 Nations Cup in Vierumaki, Finland and silver medals at the 2009 IIHF World Women’s Championship in Hämeenlinna, Finland and 2008 4 Nations Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y. … Was head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team that won a silver medal at the 2008 IIHF World Under-18 Women’s Championship in Calgary, Alta. … Was head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team for a three-game series vs. the United States in Ottawa, Ont. in August 2007 … As head coach, guided Canada’s National Women’s Team to gold medal victories at the 2007 IIHF World Women’s Championship in Winnipeg, Man., 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy, 2005 Torino Ice Pre-Olympic Tournament, 2005 4 Nations Cup in Hämeenlinna, Finland, 2004 4 Nations Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y. and a silver medal at the 2005 IIHF World Women’s Championship in Linkoping, Sweden … Has been involved with Canada’s National Women’s Team in various capacities at eight 3 Nations/4 Nations Cups and three pre-Olympic tournaments … Was head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Team during the 1999-2000 season, capturing a gold medal at the 2000 IIHF World Women’s Championship in Mississauga, Ont., and was the head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team in 1998-99, winning the 1998 Christmas Cup in Unna, Germany … Was an assistant coach with Canada’s gold medal-winning National Women’s Team at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah and served as an assistant coach during the 1993-94 and 2000-01 seasons, winning IIHF World Championship gold medals both years as well as at the 2000 4 Nations Cup and 1996 Pacific Rim Championship.
Dave Gwyn started his coaching career with the boys, where he coached Bantam AAA and Midget AAA for 5 years. After a stint as an Atom AA girls coach, Dave coached the Scarborough Sharks Midget AA team for two years, culminating in an OWHA Provincial Gold medal in 2009. That year, Dave led his team to the first Esso National Midget Championships, taking the silver medal as the Ontario representatives. For the past two years Dave has been behind the bench of the Etobicoke Junior Dolphins of the PWHL. In his first season in Etobicoke, Dave guided the team to a respectable playoff finish, winning the PWHL coach of the year award in the process, and the team has improved several places under his tenure this year. In 2010 Dave was selected as a head coach for an OWHA Bantam team participating in the Ontario Winter Games in Collingwood. This year, Dave was also named as Assistant Coach to the Team Canada Women’s National U-22 program and was behind the bench when they won Gold at the MLP Cup in Switzerland in January. He has NCCP 1 High Performance coaching certification and has been a hockey instructor for the past 8 years.
Clarke Singer is Head Coach of the nationally-ranked UWO men’s Hockey team. Singer, in his 11th season at the helm of the Mustangs, led Western to the University Cup national title in 2002, where he also earned CIS men’s hockey coach-of-the-year honours. Named as the OUA’s top coach four times, he has guided his troops to a pair of Queen’s Cup league banners (2005, 2009) and a return trip to the CIS gold-medal final in 2009 in Thunder Bay, where the Mustangs picked up silver. In January, 2010 Clarke won his 250th CIS game which puts him in elite company amongst CIS coaches. In addition to the 2005 and 2011 Universiade Games, Singer’s international coaching experience includes three seasons in the Norwegian Elite Series with Trondheim and Fredrikstad from 1994 to 1997.
Doug Stacey holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Ottawa, a Physiotherapy degree, and a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from McMaster University. Doug recently returned from the 2010 Olympics where he was the therapist for the Gold Medal Canadian Women’s Hockey Team, and has also been with the Women’s Hockey Team at two previous Olympic Winter Games. Doug is involved as a hockey therapist with several of Canada’s amateur teams including the OHL’s London Knights. He is the Hockey Canada Medical Liaison and works for the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic in London Ontario.
Natascha Wesch obtained her PhD in Sport Psychology from the University of Western Ontario (London, Canada) specializing in imagery and sport injury rehabilitation. Natascha also holds a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology/Biochemistry from the University of Western Ontario, and a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from Concordia University (Montreal, Canada). Natascha has been a mental skills coach and sport psychology consultant to numerous varsity, provincial, national, and international level athletes. She has been involved in elite competitive sport for over 25 years as an athlete, coach, mentor, and administrator. Natascha is a former international rugby player, varsity hockey player, and competitive gymnast. In her career as a rugby athlete, Natascha represented Canada on the world stage for over a decade, competing in two Rugby World Cups. As a coach, Natascha established and developed one of the most successful university rugby programs in Canada, and led Canada to the first ever Women's Rugby World Cup 7s. She has coached at the university, junior and senior provincial, national, and international levels for over 15 years.
